“He’s a young veteran player that started 13 games last season for Dallas and shows a positive upside," defensive coordinator Richard Smith said. "He’s got ideal size and good speed for our defense. Anytime we can add a player with good speed, we’re moving in the right direction.” Texans Website
"I'm very excited," said Texans general manager Rick Smith, who worked out the deal with Reeves' agent, Brian Hamilton. "We feel Reeves is a good, young player who is on the rise. And we think he will really add to a defense that is full of good, young players." Houston Chronicle
From the same article: "Kubiak said the Texans targeted Reeves from the beginning and that defensive coordinator Richard Smith, defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and assistant defensive backs coach Ray Rhodes wanted Reeves.
"We're happy to get him," Kubiak said. "There's no doubt we've upgraded our team. There's no secret our secondary is an issue and we really believe he's going to help us."
Jacques Reeves has done a nice job filling in at both corners, but according to Stats Inc, he's the most picked on corner in the NFL. Reeves has had 34 of 57 passes completed on him for 352 yards and four touchdowns. Rotoworld Forums
Assorted forums and message boards:
...Getting rid of Jacques Reeves is a must. Maybe adding another CB through FA like a Trufant or Samuel. Move Anthony Henry to SS,...
..Jacques Reeves - knows the system and as nickel corner I think he's above average...
..Seeing opposing teams key on Reeves when he is in the game makes me think that an upgrade is needed in that 3rd corner spot. Maybe he's worth resigning to be a 4th or 5th corner, but we need more out a spot that often gets pressed into the starting role...
All of them ostensibly looked at every play that Jacques Reeves made in his short career. Richard Smith also. Game film, taking notes and comparing notes.
So let me look at this differently. The 34 of 57 passes means his opponents have a 60 percent completion percentage against him. That is slightly below the average NFL pass defense. As the Cowboys allowed 342 completions all year you could say that only ten percent of this was completed at his expense.
The Texans allowed a 66 percent completion percentage. The Cowboys 58.9.
Reeves is young and 2007 was his first year as a starter. And that is every reason for opposing teams to target him.
Reeves had 61 tackles. 1 Int. And 12 PD. For comparison they are a not too far from Fred Bennett's numbers:
Fred Bennett had 62 tackles. 3 Int. And 14 PD.
I am not prepared to say that he is the second coming of Demarcus Faggins. He is a Texan now and I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt. At the moment I trust the Texans coaches and Rick Smith. This is subject to change. The more I hear about Warrick Dunn the more anxious I get.
Jacques Reeves was the Cowboys seventh round draft choice in 2004. Twenty five years old. 5-11. 192 pounds. Now he is a Texan.
